Gliterary Girl

ENTWINED WITH YOU by Sylvia Day

OVERALL THOUGHTS: This review is coming over a month after this book was published because I wasn’t really sure if I was going to read it or not. I liked BARED TO YOU (Book 1), but was disappointed in REFLECTED IN YOU (Book 2). I read every snippet that Sylvia Day released for ENTWINED WITH YOU and quite honestly; they didn’t suck me in enough to want to read the book. She was going to be at Book Bash and I really wanted to meet her, but all of the books that I own of hers were digital. So after much deliberation, I bought a hard copy. I figured I was already invested in the series, why not read the third, plus will give me something for her to sign?

SYNOPSIS: From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn’t resist. I saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside–so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat.

No one knows how much he risked for me. How much I’d been threatened, or just how dark and desperate the shadow of our pasts would become.

Entwined by our secrets, we tried to defy the odds. We made our own rules and surrendered completely to the exquisite power of possession…

THE LOWDOWN: Originally this was supposed to be a 3 book series, but it was announced by the author that it has been extended to five and a TV show is in the works. While reading it became clear that this wonderful news was delivered to Sylvia while she was writing this novel because it has the feel of a TV series in the sense that it now contains major storylines for the supporting characters. While I was happy to see a bit of peace settled between Gideon and Eva, I thought it was a little confusing that it ended with cliffhangers for the supporting characters. If you read the first two books, then you know that Eva and Gideon are made for each other in that they are the most damaged individuals you will probably ever read about. They cling to each other; they cannot live without one another; Gideon puts his life in jeopardy for her and she helps him manage and control his demons. There is major angst between them all the time, so it was kind of weird and a bit refreshing to see them have a somewhat normal relationship.

One of the reasons I wasn’t going to read this book was because the snippets released were all sexual in nature. I didn’t feel there was anything drawing me in. By the end I realized that it made perfect sense why the snippets were so explicit, Gideon and Eva have sex in almost every chapter of this book. Don’t get me wrong – Sylvia Day knows how to write sex scenes, but there needs to be a developing storyline to go along with it. This is a story that basically panders to the horny readers out there who prefer mindless sex to the traditional narrative and that was a bit disappointing.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I am so happy I bought this book, for two reasons. The first and most important, I enjoyed it. I felt the writing and story development were much richer, compared to the second installment. Even though the supporting characters got majority of the cliffhangers, I am still intrigued enough by Gideon and Eva’s storylines to continue reading the series. The second reason, it gave me the chance to meet Sylvia Day at Book Bash and she is a class act. She truly loves and appreciates her fans and her actions at public book signings show it. Meeting her in person solidified for me that I will always support her no matter if I like or dislike one of her books. In fact, I always support authors that give back and appreciate their fans and Sylvia Day is a true gem.
